The Power and Importance of Affirmations For Children - a Q&A with Carla, Founder of Eagle & Owl's Conscious Kids Affirmation Cards

Q: How did you come up with the idea to start this type of business?

2020, I had a stroke.

My son had just turned one and my world was turned upside down. On my healing journey I found affirmations and that became my number one tool.

My partner could see my transformation of my mind and my body with my posture and how I showed up each day.

The first lockdown of 2020, gave me all the time I needed to think, reflect and discover the type of mother I wanted to be. I was engulfed with fear at the state of the world and it scared me to think  about what the future looked like for my child.

HOW would I protect my baby when I can’t and won’t always physically be there to protect him? (these thoughts where circling my mind because at this early stage of the stroke recovery, I was worried I’d leave this earth sooner than I wanted to).

I was having a conversation with my partner and I had a lightbulb moment, I had just figured out how to protect my son and all children.

I can help them (children) develop a solid foundation of the mind, creating a positive system of thought to navigate the challenges and triumphs of life with grace and ease, through the power of affirmation cards.

And so, Eagle & Owl’s Conscious Kids Affirmation cards came to life!

Q: What are the benefits of affirmations?

  • Affirmations are to the mind what exercise is to the body, to strengthen and tone the muscle of the mind. Words can soothe, comfort, protect and heal us - hard situations will always come up in life, it’s a part of growing and learning. Affirmations help you deal with these obstacles to overcome them, and a positive system of thoughts reduces the recovery time of hardship.

  • Affirmations help you to develop a positive outlook on life.

  • Affirmations allow you to cultivate a positive thought system, to be in control of your thoughts and help you manage them. You have power by controlling whether you react or respond to the thoughts. We can choose our thoughts and it’s critical to teach children this from a young age.

  • Incorporating affirmations into your daily routine is the best way to help your child create a healthy habits in life.

  • Affirmations encourage you to maintain optimal health, happy thoughts actually produce happy chemicals in the body!

  • Affirmations encourage you to take action to make your goals, desires and dreams a reality.

  • Help you navigate the challenges of life with grace and ease.

  • Affirmations motivate, inspire and encourage you to be the best you can be and to live your best life!

  • Affirmations help you make better decisions because they give you perspective.

  • Affirmations allow you to interrupt negative patterns and replace them with positive ones.

  • Affirmations help you to develop a positive thought system from a young age to shape one's beliefs and values.

  • Affirmations give you permission to accept who you are.

  • Affirmations help you to challenge a negative or unhelpful thought when self-doubt creeps in.

  • Affirmations encourages self-regulation, whilst cultivating the practise of self-love, self-confidence, self-belief and awareness

  • Affirmations build the inner voice of strength, courage & resilience. Develop resilience by finding solutions, lessons & messages in hardship.

  • Affirmations allow one to have a strong sense of self-worth.

  • Affirmations empowers children to build self-esteem. I could go on and on about the benefits but I think I’ll stop here.

  • Self-affirmations play a significant role in lowering anxiety and encouraging productivity.

Q: How can a family create a healthy habit together or new routine and incorporate affirmations into their life?

As a family, sit down at the dinner table (no TV!!) and talk about gratitude, start with being grateful for the meal and then each member can say what they’re grateful for that day. This also encourages mindful conversation which supports the digestive system, allowing the body to produce the right amount of enzymes to digest the food properly!

Every evening, when everyone is winding down before bed, sit together as a family and get each member to pick an affirmation card and read it out. Then answer the reflection activity.

Every morning, pick an affirmation, or use the same card for as long as you need to, and look in the mirror when brushing your teeth and recite the affirmation with conviction. Saying affirmations in the mirror is incredibly powerful. That is the simplest way to start and you can build upon this.

There are plenty of ways to use the Conscious Kids Affirmation cards which is detailed in the deck.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge during your entrepreneurial journey and how did you overcome it?

I think challenges keep on coming with each new level you unlock within yourself and each step of success. I actually just get better at handling them because I am always working on my mindset and developing my entrepreneurial mindset.

I can reframe my thoughts and turn challenges into projects.

Q: What is your favourite book?

The Celestine Prophecy

Q: You can visit any fictional time or place. Which would you pick?

HOGWARTS!!! I want my own owl, I want butter beer and to be friends with Dobby the house elf.

Q: What is your favourite season?

Hmm, I definitely had a favourite (Summer) pre-child, I feel like my hormones have changed and never looked back. Now I can barely handle the heat, but I still love Summer. I guess now I really look forward to each season and what it has to offer, taking advantage of the leaves falling in Autumn, we go skiing in the Winter and I adore Spring with all the flora.

Q: Cookies or brownies?

Brownies for sure! That gooey inside with a crisp outside. Pair that with a cup of coffee and wow!
